Free Checking with Wells Fargo

If you have a Wells Fargo checking account and you’re paying a monthly fee, read this.

I used to pay the monthly fees for my Wells Fargo checking account until I got I finally got fed up and called to inquire why. I explained that I was a long-time member, and was always in good standing.

I didn’t see why I should have to pay for a checking account if other large banks like Washington Mutual offered it for free. But at the same time I didn’t want to change banks after being firmly rooted with Wells Fargo, and having an associated credit card account with them as well.

So I made a call to Wells Fargo and to my delight they offered me a very similar checking account program called “Custom Management” that carried no monthly or annual fees so long as I made one direct deposit a month. I had been making direct deposits each month for nearly two years, so they were able to switch me over to the new plan and they even refunded monthly checking fees for the previous 3 months in good faith (I had to ask).

Remember most large banks like Wells Fargo offer cheaper alternatives, but they won’t come to you. You need to inquire about programs like this and make demands for refunds or you’ll continue paying unnecessary fees. And that $10-$20 a month adds up over time…
