Capital One Savor Credit Card: 3% Cash Back on Dining, 2% for Groceries

food

Do you like food? And credit cards? Well, if so, you might like the new Capital One Savor card, which offers 3% cash back on dining and 2% cash back on groceries.

Clearly this new credit card is aimed at foodies, what with the highest cash back categories food-centric and the name Savor. But is it a good deal or anything noteworthy? Let’s explore.

Capital One Savor Has a $150 Sign-Up Bonus

Along with the increased cash back multiples in the categories mentioned, the new Capital One Savor card offers a $150 sign-up bonus if and when you spend $500 within the first three months of card approval.

That’s a decent bonus for a relatively small amount of spend, and aligns it with the likes of Chase Freedom and its sister card Chase Freedom Unlimited.

The card also offers 0% APR on both purchases and balance transfers for the first nine months, assuming you’re in no rush to pay down your balance.

If you aren’t spending in the dining or grocery categories, you’ll still earn 1% cash back on all other purchases. All this for $0 annual fee.

What Else Does the Savor Card Offer?

Well, it’s a World Elite MasterCard, which means you get things like trip cancellation/interruption insurance and complimentary concierge service.

Additionally, you get price protection and extended warranty for the products you buy with the card.

There are some other bells and whistles, like travel accident insurance and baggage delay insurance, but nothing too groundbreaking really.

Ultimately, you kind of have to be into earning 3% cash back on dining to be interested in this card.

The only other credit card I can think of that offers 3% cash back on dining is Chase Sapphire Reserve, which costs a hefty $450 per year.

So Savor is unique in that it’s offering a high multiple in the category sans the exorbitant annual fee. Other than that, I don’t see much here.

You also have to have excellent credit, as Capital One indicates right on the application page. Of course, their definition of excellent seems to be pretty loose, basically no major derogs in the past year and at least three years of credit history with a credit limit of $5,000 or more.

All in all, Savor has a decent/average sign-up bonus for a small minimum spend and a couple bonus categories you might not find elsewhere for no annual fee.

It could be a good choice for someone who eats out a lot and/or someone looking for a rewards credit card without the associated fees.

Personally, I often think it’s better to just go after a higher sign-up bonus, such as Capital One Spark (if you’re a business owner) or Bank of America Premium Rewards to snag the bigger reward upfront.

Of course, those options do require higher amounts of spending, so Savor might be a more reasonable choice for the more modest spender.

One last benefit to this card is that there’s no limit to the amount of cash back you can earn and you can redeem your cash back for any amount. In other words, you don’t need to earn $25 or some other arbitrary amount to actually get your cash.
