Credit scores fell three points from May to average 667 in June, according to Credit Karma, which provides free quasi-credit scores from credit bureau TransUnion.

Interestingly, average consumer credit card debt decreased 15 percent to $6,470 and average mortgage debt fell two percent to $172,957.

It’s unclear if mortgage debt is dropping because homeowners are actually paying it off, as opposed to receiving loan modifications or foreclosing, which is obviously a huge negative.

(Is bankruptcy worse than foreclosure for your credit score?)

But prolonged unemployment and a shaky real estate market have kept downward pressure on credit scores.

Consumers in the Golden State (California) had the highest credit scores with an average of 685.

The San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland MSA topped the list at an average of 702.

Conversely, residents of Alabama, Arizona, Kentucky Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and West Virginia had average credit scores below 650, which is considered bad credit to many.
