Credit card fees are rising all the time, to the point where Congress is finally stepping in to curtail what many feel are unfair practices. One such fee is the “late payment fee” credit card issuers slap down if you fail to pay your minimum payment by the due date

Below is a list of credit card issuers and their corresponding late payment fees. If you’re looking for a credit card with a low late payment fee, this is a good place to start. Keep in mind that fees do vary and are subject to change. Some credit cards actually have no late fees, such as the American Express Clear credit card.

Advanta: $19 or $39 based on balance

American DreamCard: $39

American Express: $19 on balances less than $400 and $38 on balances $400 or greater, subject to applicable law.

Bank of America Credit Cards: Based on your balance as of the day the fee is assessed- $15 if $100 or less; $29 if between $100.01 and $250; $39 if over $250.

Capital One: Your late payment fee will be based on the amount of your account balance at the time the fee is applied. Balance of $0 - $99.99 = $19 fee; balance of $100 - $999.99 = $29 fee; balances of $1,000 or more = $39 fee

Chase: $15.00 on balances up to, but not including, $100.00; $29.00 on balances of $100.00 up to, but not including, $250.00; and $39.00 on balances of $250.00 and over.

Citi: $15 on balances up to $100; $29 on balances of $100 up to $250; and $39 on balances of $250 and over.

Discover: $15 on balances up to $500, and $39 on balances over $500. For billing periods ending after 10/1/2007: If the balance is $250 or less, the late fee is $19, if the balance is greater than $250, the late fee is $39.

First Bank of Delaware: $30

First Bank of Omaha: $35 if your New Balance is less than $500; or $39 if your New Balance is equal to or greater than $500.

First Premier: $25

GM Credit Cards: $19-$39

HSBC: $39

Imagine Credit Card: $35

New Millennium Bank Cards: $20

Orchard Bank: $35

Plains Commerce Bank Total Visa Credit Cards: $29

Pulaski Bank Credit Cards: $15.00 for balance less than $100.00, $29.00 for balances of $100.00 to $1000.00, $35.00 for balance greater than $1000.00

Purpose Money Credit Cards: $35

Simmons First National Bank Cards: $29
