Al Gore Wants You to Opt-in to Electronic Credit Card Statements

Doesn’t he…?

Everyday we receive numerous letters in the mail from the many companies we do business with. We get credit card statements, investment summaries, utility bills, and other highly sensitive information. We also receive junk mail, spam, advertisements, solicitations, and other unwanted material. It’s get to the point where our mailboxes are overflowing with paperwork that usually never makes it into our house if a trashcan is en route.

Along with the inconvenient truth of receiving large quantities of unwanted mail is the safety risk many of these seemingly ordinary letters pose to your personal security. Many people don’t realize that identity theft can begin in your own mailbox. The FTC reported that four percent of victims cited stolen mail as the source of personal information, which though small, still accounts for hundreds of thousands of victims a year.

The good news is that it’s easy to minimize this potential security risk by simply opting-in to electronic statement delivery. Most companies now offer the alternative with the click of the mouse if you visit the company website. And some companies even reward you with a credit if you choose electronic statements because this option saves the company money.

Aside from the security risk, the choice to use electronic statements is more convenient, especially if you move frequently. If you address changes, your information will still be delivered to your presumably unchanged e-mail address. No need to worry about updating the information constantly and having postal mail forwarded to your new residence.

And lastly, it’s the “green” way to live. With all the rage of being “green”, you’d be a monster and the bane of Al Gore’s existence if you continued to receive paper statements each month! So do your part and opt-out! Imagine how much paper and waste we could save by simply electing to receive electronic statements instead of paper.
